One of the characters in Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook's upcoming Legion of Super-Heroes has a very specific -- and ironic -- inspiration.
Brian Michael Bendis tweeted that his and Sook's influence for the Legion character Timber Wolf is none other than Wolverine -- specifically, Darick Robertson's version of the character.
"Our Timberwolf inspiration is [Darick Robertson's] Wolverine," Bendis tweeted, "Which is still the best and most honest Wolverine outside of [Dave] Cockrum."
"Fight me," Bendis added.
Robertson's first work for Marvel was, coincidentally enough, drawing Wolverine. He later drew the character during Greg Rucka's Marvel Knights run in 2003 and 2004.
Timber Wolf has long been a member of the Legion, and Cockrum was one of the artists most associated with the franchise. When Cockrum went to Marvel and worked with Chris Claremont on Uncanny X-Men, the two created the Shi'ar Imperial Guard - a team of cosmic superheroes patterned after the Legion.
One of the Guard's members, Fang, was clearly inspired by Timber Wolf. In Uncanny X-Men #107, Wolverine had an encounter with Fang -- and ended up appropriating Fang's costume for a time. The issue was drawn by Cockrum, meaning Wolverine had once worn the costume of a character inspired by the character he's now serving as the inspiration for.
Legion of Super-Heroes #1 goes on sale November 2.
