One of the most celebrated manga creators of all time is Junji Ito, and the prolific storyteller's classic horror manga Uzumaki is being adapted as an anime miniseries.
Toonami, which will co-produce the adaptation with Production IG USA, has released a teaser for the four-part anime series, with black and white animation styled after Ito's haunting artwork. The story takes place in a small Japanese town plagued by mysterious spirals that gradually drive the inhabitants insane.
With a howling woman heard over a discordant melody, the teaser certainly captures the unsettling effect of the manga as things turn from surreal to nightmarish by the clip's ending as the deadly side effects of the spirals are shown.
Written and illustrated by Ito, Uzumaki had originally been published as a serialized manga in 1998 before being collected into three volumes. A live-action film adaptation, also titled Uzumaki, was released in Japan in 2000, divided into four distinct chapters with a different ending than the original manga.
Based on the acclaimed horror manga of the same name by Junji Ito, Uzumaki will premiere on Toonami sometime in 2020.
