Shazam Concept Artist Explains Why The Hero Didn't Get His New 52 Footwear

The first trailers for Warner Bros.' Shazam! showed that the superhero was wearing boots that closely resembled those the character sported in the New 52 comics run. This made sense, considering the comic story served as the basis for the the DC Extended Universe film. However, Shazam's boots would later be changed for the final cut of the film, from the white and gold sandals we initially saw in the teasers to a more classic-looking boot.

Now, Shazam! concept artist Jerad S. Marantz explains why the design of the footwear was eventually changed. On Instagram, Marantz shared a piece of early concept art for the character's costume -- featuring the original sandals look.

"Finally getting around to posting this work," Marantz wrote in the caption. "Here is my costume concept art for #shazam. Had an incredible time working on this project with director David Sandburg @ponysmasher and costume designer @leahmbutlerstyle and @f_cervantes3. The suit is heavily influenced by the new 52 Shazam. I’m really proud of this one, got to incorporate elements from my favorite versions of the character throughout the comics and one of my favorite DC animated films, 'War.' As well as adding a few you original touches here and there."

"There are few things that changed in the costume after my time on it," said Marantz. "The major change was the shoes. We were originally trying to make the sandals work from New 52, but ended up going back to the classic boots, which I think works really well. A lot of hard work from a lot of talented people went into this suit and the rest of the Shazam family. Couldn’t of been happier with how it turned out. Big shout out to the amazing team at @filmillusionsinc for bringing the characters to life! And lastly, big thank you to producer Jeffery Chernov, for bringing me on board."

A sequel to Shazam! has been given the green light, and the film is said to begin shooting next year.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Zachary Levi as Shazam, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the ancient wizard Shazam, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vásquez and Marta Milans as Rosa Vásquez. The film releases on digital HD on July 2 and Blu-ray and 4K UHD on July 16.
