Tony Stark has a habit of rubbing other characters the wrong way with his arrogant nature and a recent fabricated quote circulating online had implied Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo had it out for the Armored Avenger since 2012's The Avengers.
Russo was attributed to the false quote that he had personally decided to kill Tony in Endgame after his big boast to Captain America in the initial 2012 film. The director subsequently came under fire on social media after the quote began circulating, and took to Twitter to debunk it as fake once and for all. Instead, he joked, he had planned to kill off Tony in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.
Tagging Robert Downey, Jr. in the good-natured jest, Russo has worked with the actor in Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame.
Ultimately, in the final moments of Endgame, Tony does indeed die saving the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Thanos by using the Infinity Gauntlet at the expense of his life. As the original star of the MCU, the character's legacy has continued to loom over the shared cinematic universe.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film is set for release on Digital HD on July 30 and Blu-ray and 4K UHD on Aug. 13.
