HBO Orders Game of Thrones Spinoff Centered Around House Targaryen

HBO has placed a series order for a new Game of Thrones spinoff series. Titled House of the Dragon, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen and take place 300 years before the original series.

The series will be based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a compilation of stories and historical records related to House Targaryen. The drama will consist of 10 episodes and received a straight to series order. No release date or casting details were announced.

The news comes just hours after HBO pulled the plug on its second Game of Thrones spinoff. The cancelled series would have starred Naomi Watts and would have been set 4,000 years before the events of the parent show.

The ordered spinoff is created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, with Condal and Miguel Sapochnik serving as co-showrunners. The two will also serve as executive producers alongside Martin and Vincent Gerardis. Sapochnik is also set to direct multiple episodes, including the pilot.

“The ‘Game of Thrones’ universe is so rich with stories,” says Casey Bloys, president, HBO programming. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

House of the Dragon is created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, with a pilot from Miguel Sapochnik. It will air on HBO.
