Deepfake George Lucas Reacts to The Rise of Skywalker Trailer

George Lucas may not have publicly commented about Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker, but some fans put together a parody of a very bitter Lucas reacting to the new trailer.

Using deepfake technology, which smoothly superimposes one video onto another, entertainment site Collider converted old footage of Lucas superimposed onto actor Josh Robert Thompson, resulting in a hilarious reaction video.

The video pokes fun at both the new movies and some of Lucas' work with the prequels. The reaction also mixes in some heavy cynicism that isn't too far from frustrations that came to light in a new book by Disney CEO Bob Iger.

"This makes Attack of the Clones look like Citizen Kane," Fake Lucas said.

In the video, Fake Lucas points out the homages to original trilogy concept art by Ralph McQuarrie, like the Emperor's pointy throne. Under Disney, the Star Wars properties have repeatedly drawn from unused McQuarrie sketches.

"It's great because I didn't make it. Ultimately, I'm not to blame," he added. "This thing needs more Gungans."

"I was deeply hurt by the fan response to the prequels," Fake Lucas said. "When those movies came out they were very risky to me... It wasn't [about] any semblance of traditional filmmaking in any way that we've ever known it since the beginning of cinema. And the fact that people for some reason didn't like that was very upsetting to me."

Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. The film arrives on Dec. 20.
