WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Titans Season 2 premiere, "Trigon," streaming now on DC Universe.
The good news is, Jason Todd is back, bitches, and sharing center stage in the second season of Titans. The bad news, however, is that the brash, new Robin may be inadvertently responsible for much of the danger coming the team's way.
Played by Curran Walters, Batman's new protege arrived suddenly in the Season 1 episode "Together" to save Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) from certain death, with some well-placed blows, a smirk, and the declaration, "Nice to meet ya, bro! I'm the new Robin." He immediately established himself as an unabashed asshole, and wormed his way into viewers' hearts. He returned in full in the following episode, whose title bore his name, and made a cameo in the finale, but with Season 2, Jason is an official member of the fledgling Titans, for better or for worse.
Say what you will about Jason, but he knows how to make an entrance. He's drawn back into the story early in "Trigon," as Hank Hall (Alan Ritchson) and Dawn Granger (Minka Kelly), aka Hawk & Dove, come calling on Wayne Manor, in search of Dick Grayson. They instead find Jason, gleefully home alone, and riding -- and crashing -- his motorcycle inside the mansion. As expected, he doesn't exactly hit it off with Hank, who refers to him alternately as "the heroes-on-training-wheels department," "you little shit," "sweetie" and, yes, an "asshole." But if they want to find Dick, and respond to Rachel's (Teagan Croft) mental plea for help, they need Jason: He's the only one who can trace Dick's tracker -- the one inserted into an apparently unmentionable place on his body.
So, yes, Jason is helpful in bringing Hawk & Dove to the farmhouse in the middle of Ohio, ensuring that all of the key players are in one braggadocious Boy Wonder simply couldn't keep his mouth shut.
As seen in the Season 2 trailer, Jason interrupts a news report from the scene of the fight to proclaim, "Titans are back, bitches!," to the viewing public. That, unfortunately for the Titans, includes Slade Wilson (Esai Morales). We know from the promos that Slade, the mercenary/assassin better known as Deathstroke, shares a past with the original incarnation of the team; we've speculated, based on the trailers alone, that he may have murdered Aqualad, leading the Titans to disband. However, his brief appearance in the season premiere hints that the heroes aren't the only ones traumatized by their previous encounters.
We meet a disheveled Slade Wilson living, Walter White-style, in a secluded cabin. It's only an unfortunate coincidence that his visit to a store for supplies coincides with a broadcast of the news report, and Jason's interaction. Slade's surprise is obvious, and the ramifications immediate: We next see Slade, well-groomed, arriving not at the cabin, but at a very modern home -- his own -- and guided by an assistant to his armory, complete with the Deathstroke costume. Their casual conversation suggests Slade had effectively retired, in that he hadn't responded to any inquiries about his services. However, now, much like the Titans, he's back -- and the heroes have Jason to thank for that.
Oh, sure, Slade would've still glimpsed the report about the vague "Disaster At Local Farmhouse," but the details might have been lost amid the store clerk's chattering about the special Chinese chrysanthemum tea he ordered. But Jason's delightfully obnoxious declaration snapped the assassin out of his stupor, and spurred him into action, which will result in the Titans being placed in his sights, quite literally.
