Avengers: Endgame Deleted Scene Confirms the Chitauri Were Terrible

With Avengers: Endgame now out on digital, the film's bonus contents, such as featurettes and deleted scenes, are now available. While the Avengers mourning the death of Tony Stark deleted scene was released a few days ago, plenty of other humorous scenes are now out including James "Rhodey" Rhodes poking fun at Steve Rogers' heroic sacrifice in Captain America: The First Avenger. Another funny new scene features Rocket Raccoon laughing at the founding Avengers for taking so long to defeat the Chitauri army in 2012's The Avengers, essentially confirming that, as far as alien threats go, the Chitauri are pretty terrible.

This new scene takes place inside the Avengers compound, with all of Earth's Mightiest Heroes assembled in the same room. They are watching footage from the Battle of New York, presumably during their discussion to figure out the best moment to pluck the Infinity Stones out of the time stream.

Rocket asks how long it took Tony, Natasha, Steve, Thor, Clint and Banner to defeat the Chitauri. Nat answers two or three hours. "Hours? The Chitauri are the suckiest army in the galaxy," Rocket exclaims. "Why didn't you just blow up the mothership?" he then asks, referencing the alien army's weakness. This also confirms the army was defeated after Iron Man destroyed their ship with a nuclear weapon. "We didn't know that was a thing," Steve answers, which sparks a roaring, mocking laughter from Rocket.

Rocket's teasing evokes the sentiment that many fans may have had about the Chitauri in the first Avengers film. After all, while the alien army's numbers were great, they didn't pose much of a threat to the Avengers. If anything, they were more cannon fodder than anything else, and once their mothership was destroyed, they all fell down like dominos. It's a pretty unfortunate design flaw, and certainly something that the race of alien warriors probably doesn't want their enemies finding out.

However, Rocket's laughter makes it clear -- the Chitauri are terrible, and they can easily be defeated. In fact, it sounds like everyone in the galaxy knows how to defeat them. But like Steve said, the Avengers didn't know that at the time. This was their first ever encounter with alien forces. Naturally, Tony Stark, who nearly died defeating the Chitauri, doesn't take Rocket's mocking lightly  -- which is why he takes a clipper to the raccoon's head and shaves off a trail of fur right in the middle. It's somewhat deserved.
