The late-night platform Adult Swim's dark comedy, Rick and Morty, is going to be streaming on HBO Max. HBO made the announcement on its official HBO Max Twitter page as part of its media day announcements.

HBO Max, set to launch in May of 2020, is a streaming service much in the same vein as Hulu, Disney + and Netflix. New episodes will be available on HBO Max after premiering on Adult Swim. However, the episodes aren't exclusive as Hulu retains the rights to stream the show by extending its episode library by 70 episodes.

This announcement comes along with a number of other new revelations, such as an upcoming Green Lantern series as well as HBO Max's acquisition of South Park (which unlike Rick and Morty will not be available on Hulu after next summer). Other animated properties coming to HBO Max include new special episodes of Pendleton Ward's Adventure Time as well as a Boondocks remake, a Gremlins prequel, the Studio Ghibli filmography and even new animated programs featuring Looney Toons and Hanna-Barbera characters.

Rick and Morty is an irreverent dark situation comedy series from creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. The show follows the absurd adventures of nihilistic super-genius Rick Sanchez and his kind, yet shell shocked grandson Morty, as they travel the multiverse. Rick's alcoholic excess contrasts with Morty's naive sweetness against a backdrop of insane locales and situations drawn from every corner of science fiction. Supporting characters include Beth and Jerry -- Morty's neurotic parents -- and his sarcastic sister Summer. Roiland performs as the titular characters with other voice talents including Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell and Spencer Grammer. The series originally premiered on the late-night programming block Adult Swim in 2014 and has become among the platform's most popular brands.
