The title and cover art have debuted for Suzanne Collins' upcoming Hunger Games prequel novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
"This cover does an extraordinary job of capturing the conflict—both inner and outer—that lies at the heart of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," Scholastic VP, Publisher and Editorial Director David Levithan said in a statement. "The mockingjay has returned, but at a new angle . . . which is very much in line with the story that Suzanne Collins is telling."
First announced in June, the upcoming novel will be adapted into a film by Lionsgate. Set 64 years before the events of The Hunger Games, the story will take place on the morning of the 10th Hunger Games' reaping and explore the reconstruction period after the war that split the nation of Panem.
"As the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, we can hardly wait for Suzanne's next book to be published," Joe Drake, Chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said when the novel was announced. "We've been communicating with her during the writing process and we look forward to continuing to work closely with her on the movie."
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, by Suzanne Collins, arrives May 19, 2020.
