The director of the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, Dean DeBlois, is set to helm the next film interpretation of the 1883 Robert Louis Stevenson novel Treasure Island.
According to Deadline, Universal Pictures and Mandeville Films picked up the two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker, and joining him is Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast) as the writer, while David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman from Mandeville Films are set to produce the film.
Since the movie is still in the early stages of development, no confirmation was given on whether Treasure Island would be a live-action or animated film.
DeBlois is currently working on Paramount/Hasbro's Micronauts, which will be his first live-action feature as a director and is slated for a June 4, 2021 release.
The most recent animated feature by DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, earned over $500 million at the global box office over six weeks. The How To Train Your Dragon franchise as a whole has earned over $1.6 billion.
Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World stars the voices of Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Kit Harington, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T. J. Miller, Kristen Wiig and F. Murray Abraham. The film is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
