A new report states HBO Max could be the home of original big-budget DC films as the streaming service seeks to expand its appeal.

Variety has a new feature focusing on the shift in streaming that's seeing more and more studios create their own services in an effort to win viewers. Disney+ will launch next month, while Warner Bros. is gearing up for HBO Max, which will bring together its massive library. On the latter front, reportedly DC could be a source of content, with the report stating tentpole films featuring comic book characters may be developed for HBO Max.

Of the potential for HBO Max to release new films, the report indicates the budgets could match those of theatrical releases. There's a chance these could also be television shows, mirroring what Marvel Studios is doing at Disney+.

The report also explicitly mentions Greg Berlanti, who has a production deal that could see him at the forefront of producing HBO Max content, along with the likes of J.J. Abrams. For Berlanti's part, his long history developing DC content means we could see him behind some of these potential productions.

DC has a number of films in the early stages of development that seem unlikely to all hit the big screen. But with HBO Max, they'll have a new outlet for their IPs. Who knows, maybe Berlanti's long-in-development film about Booster Gold and Blue Beetle will finally come to fruition.

HBO Max is set to launch in May 2020.
