MGM has tapped Ben Wheatley to direct the sequel to 2018's Tomb Raider, while also setting a release date of March 19, 2021.
Wheatley's directorial credits include such films as High-Rise, Free Fire and Kill List, and he also directed two episodes of Doctor Who for BBC in 2014. He will replace Roar Uthaug, who directed the first installment but was never attached to the sequel.
In April, it was announced that the Tomb Raider sequel had added screenwriter Amy Jump, who's married to Wheatley. It was also reported at that time that Alicia Vikander would reprise her role as the eponymous Tomb Raider.
Released in March 2018 and loosely based on the 2013 reboot video game, Tomb Raider earned $274 million globally at the box office and brought Vikander into the world of action films. It also brought the popular character of Lara Croft back to the silver screen after a 15-year absence following 2003'sLara Croft: Tomb Raider-The Cradle of Life.
Produced by GK Films with a screenplay from Amy Jump, the Tomb Raider sequel stars Alicia Vikander. The film arrives in theaters March 19, 2021.
