While Terminator: Dark Fate is still over a month from opening in theaters everywhere, early box office forecasts for the film have its domestic opening weekend as right in the middle of the long-running sci-fi franchise.
Industry analysts currently have the upcoming sixth installment of the Terminator film series earning anywhere from $35-45 million at the domestic box office across its opening weekend, with $38 million the projected number at this time. This puts the sequel on track to potentially earn less than 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and 2009's Terminator Salvation's domestic opening weekends.
Rise of the Machines opened to just over $44 million domestically while Salvation opened to $42.5 million at the domestic box office. Should the high end of Dark Fate's current estimates prove true, it would top the two previous films, though fan response to the first trailer has been reportedly mixed. The film is currently on track to top 2015's Terminator Genisys which earned $42.4 million across the five-day Independence Day holiday weekend and $27 million domestically over the standard three-day period. The movie also seems likely to beat the openings of 1991's Terminator 2 ($31 million) and 1984's The Terminator ($4 million), not accounting for inflation.
Dark Fate marks the return of both franchise co-creator James Cameron and original star Linda Hamilton to the franchise after years away. Cameron produced and co-wrote the sequel, ignoring the events of all but the first two classic films, while Hamilton will reprise her iconic role as Sarah Connor. Whether these factors will help buoy the film with audiences over the next month has yet to be seen.
