Ever since it was first announced that Jordan Peele would executive produce and co-write a "spiritual sequel" to Clive Barker's classic Candyman, fans have wanted to know if cult star Tony Todd would return to play the iconic role. Todd himself confirmed a while back that he would be involved in some form, but wouldn't get into specifics. While nothing is confirmed at the moment, it now seems more likely than ever that Todd will don the hook-hand once again.
According to Bloody Disgusting, sources indicate that Todd is indeed back to reprise his role for a fourth time. If so, it (most likely) puts to rest some of the rumors that the film's star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) will play some version of the urban legend slasher -- the ghost of a 19th century son of a slave who was horrifically lynched near what later became the notorious Cabrini-Green housing projects in Chicago.
This hasn't been confirmed by MGM, Peele or anyone else involved in the new film, so take this news with a grain of salt until an official announcement is made. Still, the prospect of Todd back in the role is pretty great news for horror fans.
Candyman is directed by Nia DaCosta with a script by Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld. It stars Tony Todd, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyonah Parris. Filming is currently underway, with a scheduled release on June 12, 2020.
