Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz's newly-released New Mutants one-shot -- New Mutants: War Children -- contains a brief but effective shoutout to Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams. Williams, of course, also stars in director Josh Boone's upcoming New Mutants film adaptation as the lycanthropic mutant Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane.
In War Children, there is a brief sequence introducing readers to the New Mutants themselves, providing snapshots of the young superhero team going about their lives. Rahne Sinclair in particular can be seen sleeping with an open book tucked under her arm. That book is none other than author George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones, the first novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series, on which the popular HBO series is based.
From the premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones in 2011 to its finale earlier this year, Williams starred as the character Arya Stark. She was revealed to have boarded the cast of 20th Century Fox's The New Mutants in May 2017, with the horror-centric X-Men spinoff's first trailer arriving a few months later. Notably, the film is said to take inspiration from the "Demon Bear Saga," which was also helmed by Claremont and Sienkiewicz.
Written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Bill Sienkiewicz, New Mutants: War Children #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
Written and directed by Josh Boone, The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (Atlantis) as Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Dani Moonstar and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot. The film is scheduled to be released on April 3, 2020.
