Facing continued controversy and speculation of violence inspired by its impending wide release, Joker will feature increased security measures at Alamo Drafthouse locations nationwide during its opening weekend.

The Texas-based movie theater chain announced that, in response to customer concerns, it will remain in contact with local law enforcement while increasing its own on-site security. Customers cosplaying at screenings Joker's opening weekend will be permitted, though subject to search.

"There have been some guest inquiries surrounding next week’s Joker screenings, and what we’re doing as a company to ensure staff and guest safety, which is at all times our primary concern," an Alamo spokesperson explained in a written statement. "We engage with local law enforcement on an ongoing basis about security at our theaters, and while we’re unaware of any specific threat or concern, we will have additional security personnel present at each location for opening weekend for the comfort of our staff and guests. Additionally, cosplaying will be allowed, however, guests in costume are always subject to search at the discretion of theater staff at any time, and may be asked to leave for any reason."

The announcement comes after several other theater chains last weekend banned the use of weapons, masks and facial makeup at Joker screenings, with individual statements that they would similarly be in contact with local law enforcement. Landmark Theatres has gone a step further, banning customers and employees from wearing costumes to screenings outright due to security concerns.
