Despite a series of high profile releases, the summer box office fell 2% compared to 2018.
According to Variety, North American movie theaters took in $4.32 billion in ticket sales between the months of May and August. That's down 2% from last year’s $4.41 billion, but not as bad as 2017's $3.84 billion. Still, this resulted in a more than a 6% dip in year-to-date revenues, so studios will need some major successes this fall and winter to make up for the losses.
Disney was the overall winner of the summer, releasing three of the top four domestic grossing movies -- Aladdin, Toy Story 4 and The Lion King. The other spot went to Sony's Spider-Man: Far From Home, which took in $385 million domestically. Each of these films grossed over $1 billion at the box office. Other hits included John Wick 3, Angel Has Fallen and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.
Still, many films underperformed, including Men in Black: International, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Dark Phoenix and The Secret Life of Pets 2.
There is still hope that the box office will recover this fall and winter with the releases of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, It: Chapter Two, Joker, Frozen 2 and Jumanji: The Next Level.
