Age hasn't appeared to slow down John Rambo, neither on the big screen or at the box office according to early estimates.
Industry analysts predict Rambo: Last Blood, the upcoming fifth installment in the iconic action franchise, is tracking to earn approximately $21-24 million across its opening weekend at the domestic box office. Even at the low end of the estimate, this would give the venerable film series its best opening weekend.
The previous record holder, without adjusting for inflation, is 1985's Rambo: First Blood Part II which opened to $20.1 million domestically. After adjusting for inflation, the 1985 sequel's opening weekend total comes in to approximately $47.9 million. The previous film in the franchise, 2008's Rambo, had a domestic opening weekend of $18.2 million before earning $113 million at the worldwide box office across its entire theatrical run.
Last Blood features Sylvester Stallone's eponymous Vietnam War veteran trying to enjoy a quiet life of peace at his family ranch in Arizona. After a friend's daughter is kidnapped by Mexican cartels, however, the former special forces soldier takes the fight across the border with bloody results.
Directed by Adrian Grunberg (Get the Gringo) from a script written by Sylvester Stallone and Matt Cirulnick (Absentia), Rambo: Last Blood stars Stallone, Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Yvette Monreal. The film hits theaters Sept. 20.
