The events of Avengers: Endgame undid Thanos' halving of the universe as seen in Avengers: Infinity War, allowing nearly every hero of the Marvel Universe to engage Thanos' forces. One hero was notably absent from that climatic battle, however: Nick Fury, the man responsible for the Avengers originally assembling in the first place. But why?
“I don’t think we ever put him in,” co-screenwriter Christopher Markus told a crowd at Comic-Con International: San Diego. “It was [because] we have such a traffic jam of heroes and so much power, that to have a guy who, in combat, would just be firing a gun - it doesn’t come off well for Nick Fury, frankly.”
Viewers couldn't be certain that Fury had even returned until the film's epilogue, where the character is seen attending the funeral of Tony Stark.
Indeed, the finale's pace and sheer amount of characters involved made it a challenge for the filmmakers to give each one of them at least a passing nod. Arguably, most viewers probably hadn't realized Fury was even omitted from the scene.
Fury had a much more prominent role in the subsequent Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he enlisted Peter Parker's help against what turned out to be illusions created by Mysterio. That film's post-credit scene, however, reveals that Fury hadn't been as omnipresent as he had seemed in past films.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film is set for release on Digital HD on July 30 and Blu-ray and 4K UHD on Aug. 13.
