Flying Witch, But Make it Magical

Manaria Friends aka Mysteria Friends (IDK Why they translated it like this, but ok) has finally come. As a majority of the fanbase may be unaware, this was actually supposed to air Spring 2016. That’s right; almost three years ago. The air date came and went, and then about a week later, the site posted that the anime was cancelled until further notice. So to finally see it in action is somewhat refreshing. The series really holds nothing back blending fantasy and slice of life seamlessly. The story flows between Anne and Grea as they live and are friends at a magical academy. The first episode was about Anne and her adventures while episode 2 was about Grea molting. I was worried that the series was going to drag or be 100% fanservice and while the first was a fun adventure with Anne, episode two was almost complete fanservice. Not bad fanservice though, as I found it somewhat less shameful than others. Anyway so we watch Grea molt and everyone thinks she is dying. Anne runs of on an adventure to save her and we get this super cute story. I thought it was going to be boring, but it’s fantastic. It’s iyashikei but with enough energy to keep you wanting more.

Intentions and Missed Chances

This week’s episode of Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. was quite the laugh what with Kawase wanting to come visit Subaru just to see Haru all the time. Poor Subaru didn’t know what to do with himself with the constant company. Then apparently Haru was having an issue with apparitions. Anyway, the moment in Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue. that I want to talk about has to do with Subaru’s parents. Subaru comes across a photo album that his mother put together of the vacation spots that she had gone to and intended to take Subaru on. Subaru always refused because it was too exhausting for him to go travel, but upon looking at the photo album, he realized that his mother had intended to take him on a trip that had everything to do with the things he enjoyed like the authors he likes and the novels he reads. At the time, Subaru’s mother never communicated to him her intentions, and now that Subaru has found out, it’s too late. I think this is interesting as I’m sure many people relate. Parents have the best of intentions a lot of time, but those are lost when their kids find their parents overbearing or annoying. The relationships between parents and children is so complicated, but after all these years, I feel like I sort of understand and feel the melancholy that Subaru feels. Maybe we all can.

Rehab Playtime!

Although Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita! intertwines different brief stories, we didn't have to wait too long to enjoy one of the best moments of this week's episode. It all started with a harmless school assignment, in which several groups had to create a thematic board game. Sounds fun, right? Even though Hinata, Noa, and Hana had no idea what to base their game on, in the end, an obvious idea came to their heads: why not create a game inspired by their biggest role-model? Ok, it's not just a game but a "rehab game", conceived with the sole goal of encouraging Miyako and helping her with her shyness problem. How cute! Oh, but we're talking about WataTen here, so there's always more than meets the eye. When the girls' showed Miyako the game, it was pretty clear this could be counterproductive. I mean, what would you think about a game where you have to overcome your fears and smile or high five people? Well, at least it doesn’t involve total strangers but her little sister and friends. Sure, Miyako felt kinda ashamed for a second... until she realized it was a great opportunity to interact with Hana-chan: our little angel rolls the dice and there it is, Miyako now has to hug her! Too bad Mya-nee's intentions were not reciprocated (as you could imagine), and that's when Hana slaps her in the face! If you haven’t already, please go watch this scene because the whole sequence is as funny as cute, and Miyako's punchline makes it all even better. I guess some consolation prizes are good too?

The fight of the season?

Lizzy Nyanko

After receiving their exam results, and Bakugo finding out he failed, he calls out Izuku for a private conversation and confronts him about having received All Might’s powers. All Bakugo wants is for Izuku to prove to him that he is worth the power of the hero they both admired as children. And so, Izuku is begrudgingly pulled into a shounen rival battle that will surely grace at least one of our future lists. During the fight, Bakugo keeps thinking of Izuku chasing him and always being weaker than him, he remembers how All Might told Bakugo he has what it takes to be a hero, and he remembers when All Might hit the nail on the head when he said “I know you’re angry because of Midoriya’s improvement”. He remembers that All Might encouraged him and told him Level 50 (meaning Bakugo) and Level 1 (Izuku) can’t improve at the same rate, thus reassuring Bakugo that he is indeed strong enough and All Might recognizes his talents. And yet.. He’s still so angry. But why? From the beginning, we’ve been wondering exactly why Kacchan hates poor little Deku so much… And after an all-out attack from his childhood friend, Deku decides to use his strength and push Kacchan away with a strong yet gentle block/shove. Deku can stand on his own now and that just pisses Kacchan more… (why are you so angry, kid!?) Izuku sees his friend on the ground after his defensive attack and reaches out to help Kacchan up. Of course, Kacchan swats his hand away wondering why he’s helping him and not fighting… why? And it finally happens, Bakugo spills his guts and faces all his issues as they come out like uncontrollable tears on a shoujo heroine’s face. “Why did I end up chasing someone who was always behind me? Why did you get strong and become acknowledged by All Might while I… ended All Might!?”. There it is! The angsty teen finally voices his emotions and we all get to understand. He feels responsible for All Might losing his powers because he was weak and got captured by the villains, thus leading to All Might losing his power and retiring. Bakugo cries and cries and all you want is to hug the poor boy. He admits to his feelings and not knowing what to do and his overall feeling of helplessness. And then, once the boys have said and heard enough, they decide to continue the fight, but it’s different this time. It’s a proper shounen rival battle! It’s exciting to see Bakugo grow out of his immature anger issues and (hopefully) backing off of Izuku. Things can only get better if these two finally become the friends they should be!
