Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force Iffy-cial Announcement Trailer

Who it Caters to

2 years ago, we had the privilege of playing Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force on Steam, which you can read up on in our past review. When the Switch version was announced, our curiosity was peaked because we wanted to see if any changes were made to ensure fans of the series would receive anything unique. We’ll get into that a little bit later but for now, those who are new to the series are in for a nice treat, especially if you favor RPG titles. Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force makes use of the traditional turn based RPG style, but has a free form system where you’re able to position your character more precisely on the battlefield for strategic counterplay. Anyone who enjoys their RPGs will definitely want to dive into the game, especially now that it’s on the Switch, which means you can take it with you anywhere!

What to Expect

While much of the game is very much a port of the original versions, the game comes jam-packed with a plethora of DLC content that will keep players coming back for more. New dungeons are available at certain levels, which add even more of a challenge once you’ve ascended to those areas, and more characters to interact with! All DLC content is here, ready for you to take advantage of, all of which come directly from the PlayStation 4 original. With this, there are great features to take advantage of such as the Resonance Effect, which allows fencers to raise their stats by imbuing the strength of a fairy into a Fury. Godly Revival is a feature where you must remove Furies which are embedded within the Goddess and Vile God. You must undo their seals to see their true potential and actually, choosing to undo seals can alter the game’s ending. These are just a couple of features to look forward to, but we can assure you that you’ll find plenty of gameplay options to keep you busy for the long run.

Visuals

One minor negative point that we’d like to touch in is regarding the visuals of Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force. We were expecting to be rewarded with better visuals on the platform, but sadly ended up with a port that really didn’t look as stellar. Frame rate issues definitely appeared, especially when using the dash attack while exploring dungeons. Character animations just pretty much looked and behaved the same way and there weren’t any significant visual upgrades to bring the game to life. Definitely a disappointment from our point of view, but luckily the content-rich gameplay saves it from suffering.

Sound, Music

One thing we did enjoy a lot about Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force was definitely the voice acting. Every character feels unique in their own way and brings the game to life, creating a more robust and entertaining experience. Other than that, there’s not much to say about the sound department. While the music in the game is subpar by our standards, it still gives the game some substance and allows for an exciting adventure.

Gameplay

Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force is truly a fun game with a lot of content as we mentioned earlier. It has a pretty in depth plot that will keep you guessing, and with its multiple endings based on how you alter the Godly Revival, the gameplay is always an interesting one. There are three stories which provide three paths and so it’s up to you to discover them all. There’s the Goddess story, the Vile God story, and the Evil Goddess story. Perhaps the biggest selling point about the game are the numerous amount of difficulty levels you can choose from, which grants players with enough of a challenge should they decide to test their skills. You can switch the difficulty at any time during gameplay so that you can balance things out should one area prove to be either too easy, or way out of your league. Customizing weapons grants you a lot of buffs and so it’s encouraged that you take advantage of this feature since it will really help in the harder dungeons. Stack different Fury effects on each other so that going into dungeons will be a unique thrill every time, and fully optimizing weapon boosting will give you the advantage.

Honey's Gameplay Consensus:

Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force isn’t a perfect adventure by any means, but it has enough features in the game to keep you occupied for hours. With all of the DLC included and all of the endings, you’re looking at more than 60+ hours of gameplay! If you play it through on hard mode, add on perhaps another 10-20 because the game can be unforgiving at times, so expect to experience some frustrations. In the end, this game is definitely worth every penny and despite being a direct port without many significant changes, Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force is the RPG you need to have on your Switch.

Honey's Pros:

  • The game is packed full of awesome content that’s fun for hours.
  • New gameplay features add a lot more depth to the experience.
  • Voice acting is really good both for EN and JP, but JP is still the better of the two.
  • Improved frame rate, less lag.

Honey's Cons:

  • Frame rate issues do appear from time to time.
  • The game is a direct port and so nothing much has really changed.

Honey's Final Verdict:

If we had to choose between the Steam, PlayStation 4 original or the Nintendo Switch version, our pick would go towards the Switch. The reason being is that you’re getting all of the content from previous versions, plus you can take the adventure with you anywhere you go which is a huge plus! As always, for all things sweet, with news straight from Japan, be sure to keep it locked here on Honey’s Anime.
